Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

Item upgrades allow players to raise the level of equippable items such as weapons or armor, as well trinkets up to a certain amount. They can be done at any item upgrader NPC using the appropriate currency.

After rolling again, the item will still be magically enhanced.

This is not practical to implement due to the complexity of the comparison process. There's not enough space to do it correctly in the UI.

A script that examines the requirements of an item's upgrade before allowing the item to be upgraded is a different option. This method is suitable for systems that have a limited amount of upgradeable items and a minimal upgrade dependence. A sword can be upgraded from Sword+1 to Sword+2. A script could examine the Item Definition attribute for each upgrade, and then set an Item Status of "upgraded" to indicate that the upgrade is valid.

This method is more flexible than the two previous ones however it requires some additional code. It is less suitable for complex systems.

Another option is to allow players to upgrade their weapons and armor. These upgrades, called Reforges by some, improve the item's stats and decrease its cost. Reforges vary in power however the most powerful ones are the Orb of Transmutation and Orb of Embrace.

Costs

The upgrade of a piece of equipment can boost its physical power, spell power and health (for armor and rings) or give it an additional benefit while it's in your inventory. You can make upgrade components or purchase them from vendors. They can also be looted, dropped from other players, on the Trading Post, or as an incentive. Upgrade components can be slotted into weapons, armor and trinkets. They can also be slid on gathering tools. However, the majority of upgrade components are not able to be salvaged or replaced, unless with the help of an Upgrade Extractor. The exception is glyphs, which can be salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Depending on the type of item, upgrading an item could cost Dilithium or gold. A lot of upgrades require Flightstones or crests. The amount of crests or Flightstones needed to upgrade an item is contingent on the level of the gear and a maximum upgrade level is set by Blizzard. Upgrades to the highest upgrade level can be costly particularly when you're upgrading gear for PvE.

Upgrades to items can alter the ammunition type of a weapon or damage die size and size, alter its operational or unwieldy specific weapon property, or alter its hand requirement. Some upgrades can even change the appearance of a weapon.
